About
History
Irie FM was Jamaica's first all-reggae station. It went on the air in Ocho Rios in August 1990, founded by Karl Young, a reggae producer. The idea of applying for a licence arose when the state-owned JBC was selling its regional stations, and it was Bob Clarke, a singer in Young's band, who pushed him to do it. Some doubted that a reggae station could survive twenty-four hours a day, but it established itself.
