History
Abdulbasit Abdulsamad (1927–1988) was an Egyptian Quran reciter, a hafiz, and one of the most imitated voices in modern recitation, for his melodious style. He joined Egypt's national radio in 1951, was among the first to record recitations commercially, and was the first president of the Egyptian Reciters' Union. In Cairo he was the reciter of the Al-Hussein mosque and, according to one source, the only one to win three world recitation competitions, in the early 1970s. He died in Cairo on 30 November 1988.
