History
Antena 1 descends from the Emissóra Nacional, which began official broadcasts in August 1935; test transmissions had been made since the spring of 1932, after the Conselho de Radioelectricidade (Radioelectricity Council) was created in 1930, and the Minister of Public Works, Duarte Pacheco, was one of its drivers. During the Estado Novo it was the regime's main public means of communication. The first channel was called Programa 1 until 1975; in 1976, with the reorganisation after the 25 April revolution, the company became Radiodifusão Portuguesa (RDP) and the channel was, briefly, RDP Programa 1, before becoming Antena 1. Today it is one of the three national channels of RTP, with a general-interest format.
