History
The BBC World Service began broadcasting on 19 December 1932, under the name Empire Service: shortwave for English speakers in the British Empire, from the new Broadcasting House in London, with a first two-hour broadcast aimed at Australia and New Zealand. King George V's Christmas message that year was the first by a monarch on radio. The foreign-language service debuted in Arabic, on 3 January 1938, and in 1988 the service was renamed the World Service. Some say that Director-General John Reith predicted that the programmes would be “neither very interesting nor very good”.
