History
Classic FM began broadcasting at 6 a.m. on Monday, 7 September 1992, after two months of tests with a recording of birdsong. Nick Bailey presented the first programme, which opened with Handel's “Zadok the Priest”. It was the United Kingdom's first national classical music radio station since BBC Radio 3, in 1967, and was born of the Broadcasting Act 1990. Critics were wary, but four and a half months later it already had 4.3 million listeners a week. It now belongs to Global.
